The types of fire sprinkler systems include;

Dry pipe system
This system does not use water. It uses dry air and it can cover a vast area. It is mostly used in refrigerated coolers. Air is pumped in the pipes then out.

Wet pipe system
This is more popular than the dry pipe system. This fire sprinkler system uses water. It is more common in homes and small business premises.

Deluge Fire sprinkler system
This system uses open pipes. Deluge valves open up and allow water to flow into all the sprinklers. It uses open pipes connected to the water system. Water flow is constant in all the sprinklers.

Foam water sprinkler system
This uses foam and water. It is commonly used in gas stations and places dealing with highly flammable goods like airports. This system is more efficient than the wet system.

Pre action system
This is a combination of all the above mentioned fire sprinkler systems. This system is used to protect artefacts or things of great value. There are single interlock pre action systems that operate like the dry pipe systems. The double interlock systems operate like the deluge systems.

Make sure that you choose a sprinkler system that works with your chosen method of application. You need to decide if you are going to go with a timer or manual method of turning off and on the system.

Setting up a lawn sprinkler system is something that you can do on your own or you can choose a professional to install it for you. Your choice should be based on the system you choose and the amount of sprinkler needs you have. It is best to go with a professional if your needs are complex. Make sure you do not try to install something yourself before ensuring that you can handle the job. Everyone loves having a sprinkler system in their yard because of the ease of watering your yard. You never have to worry about moving your sprinkler around and missing a patch that will later turn yellow. If you are thinking about putting in a sprinkler system into your yard, here are a few things you need to know before you start.

If you are doing this all by yourself you'll need to call and find out if there are any restrictions in your community or any regulations about backflow prevention or pipe sizes. If you hire in someone they will already have this information.

You will also need to call into your utilities to find out where the piping or electricity is around your yard. If you hire out they will be able to find out for you and will typically take responsibility for any damages or mistakes. It would be horrible to hit something while you dig and then have to pay the money to fix that problem.

Another thing that you have to know before you start is about your water pressure. You need to understand if it is too high or too low. If it is too low or too high you will have to solve that before you put in your sprinkler system.

You'll first want to plan out your system throughout your yard. You'll want to have it start at your water source and work out from there.

After everything is all planned out and you have drawn out all your plans, including dimensions, start digging. You'll need to know exactly where you will be digging your trenches around your yard. Remember to be careful to avoid any utility lines.

You'll have to choose your pipes, sprinkler heads, and risers that you prefer. Before you start gluing anything, have your pipes laid out perfectly flat in the trenches.

If you choose to do this yourself you will have to measure everything exactly as well as cut your pipes. To get the best cut use only PVC ratcheting cutters.

Lawn Sprinkler Valves and How To Locate Them

Irrigation solenoid valves are the gatekeepers to your sprinkler heads.

They are connected to the water source for your irrigation and control the flow of water to each sprinkler "zone" or section. If you have a five zone system you have five valves.

Quality solenoid valves are built to perform under adverse conditions. They lay quietly in the ground doing their job year after year, covered in dirt and water. As with any equipment that is made up of moving parts, they will eventually wear out and fail.

Sprinkler valves generally fail in one of three ways:

* They will stick open and run 24 hours a day until the water source is turned off.

*They will constantly leak a small amount of water, known as "weeping".

*Or they will not turn on at all.

The problem is that after 15-20 years of being out of site and out of mind, when they fail---how do you find them?

The best and easiest way to locate a valve is with a specialized tool called a valve locater. However, these devices are expensive to purchase and generally not for rent. So before you go to the expense of hiring an irrigation contractor to find your malfunctioning valve, here are some places to look:

First, check near your water source. Many homes have their irrigation system connected to their house water (versus connected to a pump). Most city water systems will have an above ground back flow preventer. This is a metal device with handles on it to turn off the sprinkler water without turning off the water to the house. It should be located near where the water from your city meter goes into your house.

After finding the back flow preventer, take a 12" screwdriver and GENTLY probe a six foot area around the back flow. Take care to probe slowly as to not puncture any pipes. If you hit something solid , probe around this spot six inches in diameter. If you hit anything smaller than that, keep looking.

The next place to look is where the sprinkler timer is located. Check this area in the same way as you probed the back flow area.

Another indicator to determine the location of the valve is to turn on the defective zone and determine which sprinklers pressurize first. The first heads to pressurize are the ones closest to the valve. Obviously, this will not work with valves that will not come on.

Quite often, the valves will not all be placed in a central location. They will be scattered throughout the yard. A very common location is on the corners of the house.

Because your system was probably installed with a walk-behind-trencher, the valves will be at about two feet off of the walls.

Although buried sprinkler valves can be difficult to find without a valve locator, with some patience and a little luck, they can be found.

Ensuring Protection Through a Five-Year Internal Fire Sprinkler System Inspection

Automatic fire sprinkler systems are an absolute lifesaver. But like all mechanical equipment, these systems must be maintained in order to provide maximum protection to structures, the contents of these structures and - most importantly -their occupants.

A sprinkler system has many components that can become obstructed by particulates or corrosion, ultimately leading to a blockage or leak with the potential to cause system failure. These hazards develop internally, so they cannot be seen by the naked eye. Without periodic inspection and maintenance, a system can fail when called upon, causing a building to burn to the ground despite management's good intentions and investment. It is not enough to have a fire protection system; a properly maintained system is a must.

In order to give property managers a strong incentive to maintain their fire protection systems properly, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) took a significant step in 2002 by mandating an internal inspection of the piping and components of all systems no less frequently than every five years. These guidelines for inspection, which are commonly referred to as NFPA Pamphlet 25, call for measures that aid in the detection of unseen risks posed by foreign material that may compromise the system. Such foreign material may include microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), rust, sludge and debris from domestic water supplies.

A thorough automatic fire sprinkler system internal inspection will detect obstructions and corrosion to help the system remain fully functional. These inspections can be performed visually by qualified sprinkler professionals or through an independent consultant using scopes and laboratory testing. These tests can include:

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion - Identifies bacteria in most domestic water supplies that may attack the metals in a sprinkler system Obstruction Detection - Identifies whether foreign matter is obstructing piping, sprinklers, valves or other components of the system Corrosion Detection - Identifies "thinning" of pipe walls due to corrosive internal activity, typically from the reaction between oxygen, water and steel

As part of an internal inspection, the pipes may also be flushed if foreign matter is detected. This foreign organic or inorganic material can then be captured and properly identified in order to determine a course of correction that will keep the system fully functional. While these inspections are hard, potentially "dirty" work that should only be performed by qualified professionals, they can typically be performed without disrupting the business day.

Special attention is warranted for systems that draw water from municipal sources of hard water or untreated water directly from bodies of natural water. Hard water can lead to excess mineralization that can block pipes. In one instance, one of our inspection teams discovered zebra mussels inside a client's system that was drawing them in from a nearby body of fresh water!

As one of many bodies that subscribe to the NFPA's guidelines, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) requires that all buildings under its jurisdiction perform this five-year internal fire protection system obstruction inspection. All hospitals, nursing homes, and extended care facilities in the state are under IDPH jurisdiction, and thus subject to all applicable NFPA codes and requirements. Our recent experience suggests that the IDPH has stepped up enforcement of the inspection requirement, with severe consequences for those that fail to comply.

Individual insurance companies may also have specific codes and requirements for fire protection system inspections that must be followed in order to stay in compliance with the terms of their policies. All property owners or managers should be sure to check with their insurance carrier regarding specific requirements.

Complying with the NFPA five-year internal inspection guideline also brings a positive financial return. Buildings that are fully covered by sprinkler systems typically receive reduced insurance rates and may receive further discounts by undergoing internal inspections every five years. Most importantly, regular system inspections bring peace of mind that fire protection systems will do their jobs to save both people and property in the event of fire.
